Gabriele Münter is important for several reasons: As an expressionist painter whose house in Murnau, South of Munich, provided her friends of the artists’ group ‘Blauer Reiter’/’Blue Rider’ with a reference point, and as donator of over 80 paintings by her friends and colleagues, above all her partner of many years, Wassily Kandinsky. Münter kept these paintings safe during the Nazi era and the war. When she donated them to the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in 1957, she put this museum internationally on the map.

At the Lenbachhaus we will see the most comprehensive exhibition of Münter’s work in 25 years. It widens the focus far beyond the ‘Blue Rider’ era and also includes her photographic works. More than half of the 130 paintings on view have never been shown publicly before, or not since Münter’s death in 1962.
