Munich, 25. April 2019 19:00 to 21:30

Two rarely staged one-act operas combined to form a new entity: The Opera Studio of Bayerische Staatsoper performs Mavra by Igor Strawinsky und Iolanta by Peter I. Tchaikovsky. Director of this successful experiment is Axel Ranisch, well known for movies like Dicke Mädchen, Familie Lotzmann or episodes of the famous German TV crime series Tatort . The RG Munich experiences this new production at the Cuvilliés Theatre, Germany’s most important theatre in rococo style. The former court theatre of the Munich Residenz, it was finished in 1752. Many great opera performances were staged there, including the première of Mozart’s Idomeneo.

Igor Stravinsky: Mavra Stravinsky’s Opera is based on the verse poem The Little House in Kolomna by Alexander Pushkin and is a comedic love story built on travesty. The piece from Stravinsky’s neo-classical period (première in Paris in 1922) includes references to Russian Romanticism, and even ragtime.

Peter I. Tchaikovsky: Iolanta Tchaikovsky’s last opera premièred in Moscow in 1892 together with his ballet, The Nutcracker; the piece was first performed at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 1847, and has not been performed there since.
