Munich, 22. September 2019 9:00 to 20:30

DAADians from Munich and Ulm travel together to Nördlingen, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany, with a history going back more than 1100 years. This former Free Imperial City may not be quite as famous (or overrun) as Rothenburg, but it is equally attractive, almost perfectly round in shape with a complete, 2.7 km long city wall with towers and parapet.

Nördlingen was built within the enormous Ries crater, one of the best-preserved and most impressive impact craters of the world, which was created about 15 million years ago by our planet’s collision with a 1 km wide asteroid. Nördlingen is also famous as the home of Gerd Müller, ‘Bomber der Nation/The Nation’s Bomber’ and one of the best footballers of all time.

After a 2 hour guided city tour in English, which will include all major aspects incl. an introduction to the RiesKraterMuseum http://www.rieskrater-museum.de and Geopark Infocenter, we take a lunch break and then decide which further option(s) to go for:

  • a stroll through part of the Ries Geopark https://www.geopark-ries.de/en/. In 1970, NASA sent Apollo-14 and -17 mission astronauts to the Ries Crater for geological field training.
  • an in-depth visit to the RiesKraterMuseum, which provides an intriguing view into the earth’s history and features a special exhibition devoted to the 50th anniversary of the first landing on the moon
