Nymphenburg Castle, Nymphenburg Park, and Botanical Gardens

The regional group Munich explores the Nymphenburg Castle in the course of a guided tour in English, followed by a walk through the Nymphenburg Park (one of the biggest in Europe) to the adjacent Botanical Garden, which will be in full bloom.

Nymphenburg Castle owes its foundation as a summer residence to the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne, Max Emanuel, who was born in 1662 to the Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife, Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, after some ten years of marriage. Under Max Emanuel it acquired its present-day dimensions. Subsequent electors extended the grounds and remodeled the interior. When Bavaria became a kingdom, in the early nineteenth century, Nymphenburg remained a favourite residence of the Bavarian royal family. Ludwig II of Bavaria (reigned 1864-1886, builder of Neuschwanstein and other castles) was born here in 1845.

The famous Munich botanical garden is one of the most important ones worldwide.  It houses 16,000 plants from all over the world (incl. fantastic orchids), outside and in greenhouses, and regularly features lectures and special exhibitions, e.g. a rose show in June. The Botanische Staatssammlung and the LMU institute for systematic biology are also located on the premises. http://www.botmuc.de.
