Walking Tour Hamburg - Topic Colonialism
Hamburg, June 18, 2026, 4:45 PM to 7:15 PM
We would like to warmly invite you to the city tour “ Caoutchouc, Cannons and Cocoa: Colonialism in Hamburg” (in English) on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
We will meet punctually at 4:45 p.m. at the Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal on Rathausplatz (next to the exit of the U3 Rathaus subway station). From there, we will begin the tour of two hours.
In Hamburg’s Old Town and New Town, from the Town Hall to the Speicherstadt district, we will explore traces of the city’s colonial past. Magnificent office buildings and company headquarters point to key actors in colonial policy. Which goods were shipped through the Port of Hamburg? Where did they come from? And how does colonialism continue to shape our world today?
We will visit the Afrikahaus, Laeiszhof, and Slomanhaus, as well as the inner courtyard of the Stock Exchange, where we will discover Batavia. In the historic Deichstraße, we will learn about the wide variety of overseas products that were sold in so-called “colonial goods stores.” The tour will conclude at Sandtorhafen in the Speicherstadt, where many valuable goods from overseas were once stored and processed.
The majority of the costs will be covered by DAAD-Freundeskreis. Participants only need to contribute 6€ per person, plus any personal expenses for food and drinks, in case you’d like to join us for dinner afterwards.
If you would like to participate, please register by Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Please register only if you are certain that you can attend, as the number of places is limited. If no registration fields are available, the event has unfortunately reached full capacity.
