The 109th Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) session takes place on Friday, October 7, 2022, 7-8.30 pm CEST (GMT/UTC +2). The topic will be China’s Policies in Xinjiang: Counterterrorism or (Cultural) Genocide?

The speaker will be Prof. Dr. Björn Alpermann, chair professor of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Würzburg. His research focuses on China’s political culture and population policies including ethnic minorities, among others. His most recent monograph about Xinjiang and the Uyghurs was published as open access in 2021.

Mr. Alpermann studied Modern Chinese Studies, Economics and Political Science in Cologne and at Nankai University, Tianjin. He was a research assistant in the field of Modern Chinese History/Politics, Economy and Society at the East Asian Seminar of the University of Cologne and completed his doctorate in Modern China Studies in 2006. After a research stay at UC Berkley’s Center for Chinese Studies, he became a junior professor at Würzburg University.
