Munich, 7. April 2018 19:30 to 22:40

‘Macbeth’, number ten among Giuseppe Verdi’s 26 operas, is his darkest and most violent. The libretto is based on Shakespeare’s drama about the rise and fall of the Scottish general and later King Macbeth and his wife, and dramatises the damaging effects of unfettered ambition. At the Bayerische Staatsoper we witness the stark, powerful production by Martin Kušej, which was first staged 10 years ago.

The main roles will be performed by a.o.: as Lady Macbeth, the Russian mezzo soprano Anna Smirnova, who has sung Verdi before in Munich; renowned English baritone Simon Keenlyside as Macbeth; Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, who is also a successful concert singer, as Macduff, the role he debuted with in 1997.
