Regional Group Kaiserslautern
At the Heart of the Palatinate Forest
Experience history at first hand as you follow in Emperor Barbarossa’s footsteps, explore the Palatinate Forest on a walk or on a hike, go swimming in the largest open-air pool in Europe – we invite you to do all these things and look forward to meeting you.
Almost every month, we offer activities for you to discover Kaiserslautern and the region. For example, we meet for guided tours, city walks, museum visits or walks around Kaiserslautern, through the Palatinate Forest and along the River Lauter.
I am a postdoc. In addition to my research, I have had the most wonderful experiences at activities organised by DAAD Alumni & Friends.

Kaiserslautern is located at the heart of the Palatinate Forest, the largest expanse of forest in Germany. On our hikes and walks, you will hear the tales about Emperor Barbarossa, who slumbers in the Kaiserberg, and discover the extremely rare Elwetritsch species of bird. We visit the towns in the surrounding area like Speyer, Trier or Mainz, where we show you well-preserved historical monuments and take you to museums and cultural events.
We are pleased if your partners and families – and of course your children – join our activities. Activities like painting and looking for Easter eggs are fun for old and young. And if you have your own ideas and suggestions, we will be happy to hear from you.
“The exchange with DAAD scholarship holders from different countries and cultures greatly enriches my personal life.”
