Regional Group Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is famous for its picturesque promenade by the Rhein, its Altbier and what was once the second-largest Japanese enclave in Europe. Nowadays it entrances visitors through its medieval old town, modern architecture such as the Gehry buildings, and the numerous art galleries in the city centre.

A German state capital with a uniquely Asian touch

“Within ourselves lie the stars of our happiness.” This quotation comes from Heinrich Heine, the writer after whom Düsseldorf’s university is named. Along with the Robert Schumann Conservatory, it attracts most students. The Düsseldorf Regional Group holds an autumn meeting to welcome all new DAAD scholarship holders. This is regularly followed by a visit to the Düsseldorf Christmas market. In the spring we visit an exhibition or explore the “Glaskrypta” for a tour under the expert guidance of its creator. Our programme also includes trips to the opera and the ballet, often in conjunction with the Cologne Regional Group. We also organise occasional tours to cities such as Trier, which is a short distance away.

Anja Moldenhauer
Between 1998 and 2000 I held a DAAD scholarship as a postdoc at the Sloan Kettering Institute in New York. It wasn’t my first scholarship, and it wasn’t my last, either, but it was probably the one which was most important for the rest of my career. I have since gone on to become a consultant at Düsseldorf University Hospital and a member of the Faculty of Medicine. I support the Alumni & Friends because I see it as a chance to build bridges between nations and academic specialisms.
