Regional Group Saarland
Welcome to Saarland in south-west Germany, the smallest of the country’s federal states. Saarland is a fascinating region in the very heart of Europe with much to discover. We’d love to show you what makes us different: our culture, landscape, variety and our French-inspired “savoir vivre”.
“Savoir vivre” in Saarland
Would you like to find out how Saarlanders live? Or maybe you want to meet other scholarship holders at Saarland University during your free time for a chance to explore your host country a bit more. Perhaps after all the uni stress, you just want to let it all drain away on a walk to enjoy the countryside?
If any of these describe you, come along to one of our meetings. We arrange picnics, games evenings, walks and barbecues. We also go on trips to events such as Christmas markets, concerts, plays and festivals such as the Max Ophul Festival of new German-language films and the Franco-German “Perspectives” festival of theatre, dance and performances on the streets and squares of Saarbrücken. We catch up at the university campus in Saarbrücken to have lunch in the cafeteria or sit down for coffee and cake.
Invitations to all our events are sent out by email. If you’d like to be added to our mailing list, the address is listed under “Contact” below. You can also send us your requests and suggestions for activities at any time.

Alexandra Mayn: Alexandra Mayn has contributed to the work of the Saarland Regional Group in the DAAD Alumni & Friends since summer 2021. Originally from Kasan in Russia, she first came to Saarbrücken in 2018 on a DAAD scholarship. She is currently studying for a PhD in computer linguistics at Saarland University. Alexandra has lived in the USA, Italy and the Netherlands and greatly values contact with new cultures and languages. She is committed to offering scholarship holders in Saarland a place which provides a supportive network for them and helps them connect with other DAAD scholarship holders, as well as giving them the chance to get to know one another on cultural events and excursions into the countryside. Her plans for future projects include a virtual “Stammtisch” where scholarship holders in Saarland can meet regularly to improve their language skills by talking to a native speaker about various topics. She looks forward to board game evenings and country evenings where scholarship holders each bring a dish from their home country. |
